Scott Kalitta died Saturday when his Funny Car burst into flames and crashed at the end of the track during the final round of qualifying for the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. Kalitta, who began racing in 1982, was a two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion in 1994-'95. His father is a legendary team owner and former driver who raced as the Bounty Hunter, and his cousin Doug Kalitta competes in the Top Fuel class.
This is the second Funny Car driver to die during qualifying in just over a year. Eric Medlen of John Force racing died last season.
